2012 - One Billions Dollars!!!!

. . . .We have defended Emanuel’s right to be on the ballot in two earlier editorials, leading some to question whether we would have so forcefully run to the defense of a less prominent candidate.

In truth, probably not, though the same legal and common-sense arguments would apply. But it is precisely because Emanuel is no also-ran in this election — polls show he is the favorite of almost half the voters — that ruling him off the ballot would have been a travesty.

Tens of thousands of voters effectively would have been disenfranchised.

Now let’s get back to what should be the real issues in this election — the quality of our schools, the safety of our neighborhoods, the soundness of our city’s finances.

Although, let’s admit it: This was a fascinating education.

Last night I watched the debate and "Working Families" was repeated more times than Charlie Sheen has been taken to the ER.

Working families, like quality schools ( read CPS same-old-same-old), the safety of our neighborhoods ( read anti-gun marches to stop the violence and trot out Burge every three weeks for a hate fest) and soundness of city finances ( read more boon-doggles) add up to President Obama's Billion Dollar 2012 Campaign*.

Rahm Emanuel might make a good Mayor. However, the Hosannas coming from the Tribune and the Chicago Sun Times editorial boards and iconic ink-slingers do the math for us "working families." Working Families like the Pritzkers, God Love 'Em!

Creation of an outside group by an obvious Obama insider, or a major donation from a high level Obama supporter, such as Chicago fundraiser Penny Pritzker, to an existing group.

President Obama's Campaign 2012 is in the blocks and will be bankrolled by an estimated One Billions Dollars. Chicago is Headquaters. Dave Axelrod is pulling the switches. Rahm Emanuel's service to his country these last two years has paid off handsomely. Andy Shaw is running the BGA. Can't get better than that. Except for Working Families, Cops, City Workers, Home Owners, Firemen, Skilled Tradesmen, Kids and future homicide statistics.

Obama and 2012: The first billion dollar campaign?

It's more than a possibility. Obama spent $750 million to get elected in 2010 and an incumbent president has even more opportunity to rake in the cash.

Chris Cilliza on the reasons Obama might raise that almost unthinkable amount:


First, he collected $750 million while running as a senator. He'll now be running as a president, which should allow him to clean up financially to an even greater extent, thanks to the power of incumbency.
Second, the continued development and maturation of Internet fundraising over the past four years means that the $500 million - yes, you read that right - that Obama raised online in 2008 could well be topped in 2012, noted Ben Ginsberg, a top Republican lawyer who served as an adviser to former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney's 2008 presidential bid.

Third, the growth of a shadow Republican Party of outside groups - epitomized by American Crossroads, which spent $70 million on the 2010 midterms - should help fuel Democratic donations to Obama. (It remains unclear whether a Democratic-aligned outside group - or groups - will form to siphon off some of those donations.)

While the pieces are clearly in place for Obama to crest the $1 billion fundraising mark in 2012, some skepticism remains - even among his supporters - about the president's ability to reach that lofty mark.


That skepticism may be well founded. Certainly the small donations that sustained the campaign through much of the primaries will probably be down as many of the young have lost faith in The One. But that may be offset by many more "bundlers" who will seek to curry favor with the incumbent.


One thing is nearly certain; Obama is not going to raise less than the amount he gathered in 2008. That should put the GOP on notice that they must do a much better job or, as in the campaign against John McCain, Obama will leave Republicans in the dust with his fundraising.

The late Billy Higgins,CPD, who went home to Christ on January 9th, 2010, was a brilliant man - witty, insightful and honest. He had absolutely no PC blood in his veins and was equally critical of fools regardless of race, creed or color. Billy was an Equal Opportunity Ball Buster.

Billy Higgins caught a murderer in downstate Illinois, at the request of a police department sent to Supt. Terry Hilliard. Billy analyzed the information sent to CPD by the downstate detectives and identified the murderer of a young girl, who was subsequently arrested, convicted and imprisoned for life. Billy was an Area 2 Homicide Detective who along with his partner Det. Martin J. Tully (ret.) held the highest homicide closing records for years.

Cops are some of the smartest people I know. The other day, the issue of residency for cops, firemen and other city workers came up. Only Carol Moseley Braun, of all the candidates clearly and honestly articulated the realities of such a move - middle class flight. By middle class, Senator Braun means white exodus from Edison Park, Sauganash, Garfield Ridge, Hegewisch, Clearing, Scottsdale, Beverly, Morgan Park and Mount Greenwood - that is where white cops, firemen and city workers live.

On Second City Cop Blog a commenter offered this concerning the Residency Issue -

If u have a home in the city , it's the worst idea. Your house will not have a buyer all the police neighborhoods will loose value and sit on market waiting for a buyer for a very long time. How about giving us a tax break instead for living here.

Carol Moseley Braun alone artculated the realities of the residency rule problem, but a cop articulated the solution.

President Bill Clinton does not live or vote in Chicago," Braun press secretary Renee Ferguson said in a statement. "He's an outsider parachuting in to support another outsider. For him to come on the day following Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday to insert himself in the middle of a mayoral race, when the majority of the population and mayoral candidates are African American and Latino, is a betrayal of the people who were most loyal to him. Well, Rahm Emanuel proves that a tough guy is the guy who can take it and he is one tough guy.

The race to replace Mayor Daley entered a new phase on Friday. You might call it, “Gang up on Rahm.”

During a joint appearance before the Chicago Tribune editorial board that was more like the first mayoral debate, Carol Moseley Braun, Gery Chico and Miguel del Valle were like a tag-team attacking Rahm Emanuel.

They hit the former White House chief of staff on everything from his abrasive personality and his proposal to reduce city pension benefits for existing employees to his support for curtailing teachers’ right to strike to his role as a roadblock to immigration reform.

They hammered him on his stint as a member of home mortgage giant Freddie Mac, which critics blame in part for the foreclosure crisis. Braun even accused Emanuel of throwing women “under the bus” by excluding abortion coverage from President Obama’s health care reform act.

Given the opportunity to question her opponents directly, Braun jumped on Emanuel for some of the take-no-prisoners antics that earned him the nickname, “Rahmbo.”

“It’s been reported — in fact I’ve had a conversation at one point — with the congressman to whom you sent a dead fish. And you’re reported in the New York Post as telling your workers to, `Take the Tampons out and get to work,’ “ Braun said.

Senator/Ambassador/Pitch-Gal Carol, I am toxically shocked! Such language! Such a Trope! Dead fish and tampons?

The race for mayor is a dilly. Out here in the hustings, the helots watch and wait to vote.

Rahm Emanuel, it seems to me, will outlast everyone but Carol Moseley Braun coming up to the primary.

The Race for Chicago Mayor - The National Side Show Referendum on Hope and Change - has hit the Midway.

It appears that Rahm Emanuel is out to clear the boards in order to ease the transition between Mayor Daley's decades of control to Rahma-A-Lama-Dang-Dong's digits on the Game Paddle of Chicago's Political X-Box.

Congressman Jesse Jackson,Jr. already had his meeting with Rahm about the Mayoral Race, share thoughts and feelings about just how best to serve Chicago, and found that his social acquittance was a chip on Rahm's coaster.

In that spirit, Rahm, with war chest of $2M Buckeens, is reaching out and touching anyone who voiced an interest in opposing him -including the Terror of Tiny Town Himself -Rahm's Congressional Place Holder - Mike Quigley.

Quigley ran against a young girl for Cook County Commissioner several years ago* and used the Axelrod/Emanuel playbook ( Smearing for Dummies ) on Ms. Mary Ellen Daly. However, That won't work with Rahm.

Those Emanuel has contacted say they weren't bullied to get out of the race.

"He's a big dog. Big dogs don't need to do that," said U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley, who holds Emanuel's former House seat and met with him Wednesday afternoon in Washington.

Jesus, and all this time I thought that Rahm had been a ballerina! Well, Quigley was deathly afraid of a bridal shoppe owner; so, why not quake in his Keds before a ballerina?

Now, Quigley believes, the sheriff is coming after him with guns drawn. In the March 19 Democratic primary, Quigley faces Mary Ellen Daly, a 27-year-old bridal shop manager who he calls "a candidate from out of nowhere--with no discernable credentials, but an appealing last name." He's convinced Sheahan is her puppet master.

"Sheriff's mad at me because I'm telling the world he's a sexist, racist, homophobic bad guy," Quigley charges, wolfing down Chinese takeout in the Belmont Avenue office he shares with his mentor, 44th Ward alderman Bernie Hansen, for whom Quigley was once chief of staff. "He's created an atmosphere of excessive force, that might makes right."

The next Chicago Mayor will be either Oliver Cromwell ( someone takeout a Cliffs Notes for the Progressives and explain the Lor' Protector's Commonwealth modus operandi following the collapse of Charles I Stuart's reign)or Happy Hooligan.

If you thought Harold Washington's slap dash Administration or the post-Harold Mell-an-oma was goofy, just wait.

Yesterday, I posted that Bob Tyrrell, founder and editor-in-chief of The American Spectator, had voiced interest in running for Mayor.

A sharp and very seasoned political operative offered this via e-mail -

This is silliness. . . .First, the residency requirement.

Second, even if that could be successfully challenged which I doubt, does anyone believe someone gone for so long could come back and be taken seriously in a city as parochial as Chicago. The suggestion shows how long Tyrrell has been gone.

Third, this would be worse than an implausible answer to the opportunity for a center-right mayoral candidate, it would be counterproductive.

If Tyrrell and his well-heeled friends were serious about aiding the local effort, they would be looking locally.

The Tyrrell idea is self-indulgent nonsense.
