Black Sails Season Two Raises The Rainbow Flag: Must The Pirate's Heart Want What the LBTQ Want Too?

 Yo, Ho and Ho again! Cable TV's Black Sails just hoisted the Jolliest of Rogers on a Rainbow Banner!

 The show is gorgeous to look at and action-packed, but over the first season and a half there didn’t seem to be a lot there specifically for gay (male) audiences. Sure, the show features many attractive actors, among them Tom Hopper, Toby Stephens, Zach McGowan and Toby Schmitz. (Added bonus, a couple of these guys seem to have no qualms about full frontal nudity.) The series also can boast a central lesbian character– a beautiful and clever prostitute named Max (Jessica Parker Kennedy) who has had two very passionate relationships with other central female characters. But gay men at least seemed pretty much absent from the canvas. That is, until last night’s episode.

  ABC - the Disney network is and has been fociferously gay. Sonic fast foods demands to sell the Rainbow Flag along with its hot dogs.  Fair enough.  Hollwood demands to be heard and its message for last twenty years or so, is loud and proud about homosexuals.  No big deal.

Genres?  The Pirate movie.  Gay subtext universal?  Gilbert & Sullivan defined gay according to the now archaic meaning. Douglas Fairbanks, Ty Power and Errol Flynn the same - cut a throat and lark-out a joyful 'Ha,Ha, Me Hearties!'

Real pirates.  The Gangster Disciples of Carribean were as homophobic as People and Folks demand of stone killers and players.

Hollywood?  Tin-ear. Peter Pan, not Peter Blood!

Pre-Stonewall Maritime Homosexual practices were punishable by death.  Homosexuals remained closeted, or went rouge like Claggert in Herman Melville's novella Billy Budd about the homsexual stalking of a handsome sailor, by the afroemnamed Master at Arms.

The Starz channel and other cable television outlets are thick with gay themed series, movies, documentaries, stand-up concerts and investigations.

America's part in WWII was cover nicely with two ten part series - Band of Brothers and The Pacific.  Vietnam, The Depression, Korea?  Not much to tell there.

Sex sells and blood sells.  Now mix them up and as quick as you can Say Will and Grace. . . you get Sex Cells and Bloods Cells and . . .Pirates! Ambiguous . . .nope, better yet, . . .A Pirate Captain who is Questioning!

Piracy is finally out of Davy Jones' Locker.  Black Sails, a pirate series packed with the usual cable TV KY Jelly lubrication of sapphic pillow talk and back-porch majority rule in matters of the heart, now has added the heart.  Capatin Flint is a Nancy boy. 

Yep, the man who terrorized the warm waters of the Carribean is really a just a man in full denial of his lust and longing for an English Lord.  Captain Flint is now fully out of the closet and liberated.

Pirates. Buccaneers. High Sea free booters.  Captain Blood?  You know.

We get it homosexuals (Male/Female & Whatever) make up 2% of our human population.

Gays sell us our mortgages; they people our villages; they do more than dance in musical comedies. We understand that and we treat them like neighbors. I nod with sympathy whenever Stephen Fry cries about his gender specific heart breaks.  I get it. It is no tiresome.

Black Sails was a fairly entertaining pirate series. I'm off it. Black Sails?  Not worth watching Brokeback Cove.   What's next, The Enola Gay - Now It Can Be Sung! ?    

Did the gay agenda jump the shark with this one?  I think so.

INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - The U.S. Episcopal Church is poised to become the first major religious denomination in the United States to approve a rite for blessing gay marriages after its bishops overwhelmingly approved such a liturgy on Monday. . . .The United Church of Christ, a mainstream Protestant denomination with about a million members, has gone further so far than any other U.S. church, voting in 2005 to support same sex marriage. Chances are that if you choose to believe that abortion is a blessing,  you will also bless same sex marriage.  You will considered yourself nuanced and fully evolved.  This is marriage of opinion, or if you insist, conviction is as mainline as it gets. 

Mainline Protestant churches and denominations have long approved Darwin's survival of the fittest. The Mainline Protestant churches ( United Church of Christ, United Methodist, Evangelical Lutheran, and Episcopal as well as Quakers and the various Moravian churches) get their name form the old Philadelphia suburb along the Pennsylvania Mainline Railroad, noted for its affluence.  The more affluent one might be the more one might associate with Mainline Protestantism*. With affluence comes educational opportunity and a post-secondary degree more than possible. Mainline Protestantism takes a nuanced view of scripture known as High Criticism - this holds that the Bible should only be regarded as a neat read - "Mainline denominations generally teach that the Bible is God's Word in function, but that it must be interpreted both through the lens of the cultures in which it was originally written, and examined using God-given reason. Mainline Christian groups are often more accepting of other beliefs and faiths." ( emphasis my own).  

If God's Word is regarded in function, no wonder Bill Moyers is the  Mainliner's Pope.  God never wrote speeches for LBJ insisting more kids get sent to Vietnam, after all.  Likewise, God never should the 'good sense' to turn on LBJ when things got uncomfortable.  The heart wants what the heart wants.

America's secularism is rooted in Mainline Protestantism.  Margaret Sanger's genocide of millions has had the full communion and hearty support of Mainline Protestantism.  Gay marriage is merely an adjunct of abortion.

The Episcopal Church in America announced its full and unflagging support for the marriage of Man and Man, or Woman and Woman.  The Episcopal Church has fully evolved and joined abortion and gay marriage in its rituals, doctrines and teachings. Killing an unborn child is blessing.   Wedlock without water - there will be no offspring in a same sex marriage no matter how many times the Rev. Doctor Ragsdale intones over the couple.

An Episcopal pre-school will be little more than a orphanage.

Cardinal George and Catholic Charities - The Hands That Helped HIV Victims

Gay Activists are nothing like the KKK -they are much better served by the media.

Civil Unions have ended nearly 200 years of Catholic help for children and childless couples. The move to Homosexual Marriage in Illinois requires more hostility toward the only Institutional Faith ( hospitals, schools, and services) that will not yield on abortion or the marriage between a man and a woman. It is all about politics, money and votes.

Retired Marine General Sheehan was hauled before the Grand Inquisitor - Senator Carl Levin to testify on homosexuals in the American military. General Sheehan offered a history lesson and was attacked by Progressive politicians, the Obama White House, and the main stream media. General Sheehan reported that Dutch soldiers had caused unnecessary deaths of Muslims at the hands of the Serbs in Srebrenica .

The pile-on took place as political cover for the lifted 'Don't Ask; Don't Tell' military doctrine.

The Netherlands have a Diverse Military that celebrates sexual preferences.

General Sheehan who had his boots on the ground at the time of the curious events and suggested that the problem lay with the Dutch soldiers - who might have happened to be homosexuals.

Howls of derision cascaded down upon General Sheehan. Irish journalist Kevin Myers presented the howl-down as an example of Media Over-Lords.

What Gen Sheehan had actually told the Senate Armed Services Committee in its hearings into allowing open homosexuality in the US armed forces was largely as follows. He said that after the Cold War, European militaries had "concluded that there was no longer a need for a combat capability". The peace dividend had caused European governments to socialise their militaries, to unionise them, and to allow open homosexuality. This resulted in "a focus on peacekeeping operations because they did not believe the Germans were going to attack again or the Soviets were coming back". He then turned to events in Srebrenica, where the Dutch battalion was "understrength and poorly led". He described how Serb forces entered the town, tied Dutch soldiers to telephone poles and then massacred the Muslims.

The chairman of the committee, Carl Levin, interrupted him: "Did the Dutch leaders tell you that it was because there were gay soldiers there?"

"It was a combination. . ."

Levin interrupted him again. "Did they tell you it was because of gay soldiers, that's my question."

"They included that as part of the problem. It was the liberalisation of the military, the net effect of, basically, social engineering."

Senator Levin, who had controlled the questioning, then denounced Gen Sheehan for blaming the massacre on homosexuals. Gen Sheehan spoke again: "My comment was the liberalisation of. . ."

He was interrupted again, while the senator lectured him for stereotyping, and for suggesting that gays could be not be great fighters. "I didn't say gays weren't great fighters," protested the general. "The liberalisation of the Dutch military. . ."

He was interrupted again, and lectured once more for saying what he hadn't said. Levin thus began the destruction of the reputation of a great and patriotic marine who had served in his country at war, while Levin had stayed at home.

Never mind that you might think Gen Sheehan's arguments are poor and his opinions old-fashioned. They might very well be both. He is nonetheless entitled to be reported fairly and that didn't happen. And so everywhere he is accused of alleging that gays in the Dutch army (even more, apparently, than General Mladic) caused the massacre at Srebrenica.

This is a good example of how the media agenda works today, and it is, moreover, made altogether more sinister by the fact that its proponents are usually completely unaware of what they are doing. They are contestants in an endless "liberalism" competition, the outcome of which is for liberal thought police to seek out and magnify the possibly heretical thoughts of suspected bigots, as a prelude to their destruction: Sheehan today, and Everyman hereafter. Liberal journalism is no longer the voice of the free, but the hunting horn of the mob.

Those lines always reminded me of the great people in public life, who struggle to do good for people. Some even end up in a Federal Prison.

One very good guy I know is sitting out the last of his semesters in Terra Haute, in no small part due to a very good man himself - several good men actually.


I just got off the phone with a genuine Chicago voice in print. He writes for one of the the two big Chicago Dailies.

We shot the breeze about a mutual friend who is having a particularly tough time - that friend is also in the cold and impersonal world of modern journalism.

Our conversation turned to things political -

"Hey, what's up with your Republicans?"

My Republicans?

"Yeah. You went all McCain."

Illinois Republicans blow their toes off - not unlike up-state New York Republicans. I like Dan Proft.

"Jesus, he has about twenty seven Cicero contracts and stuff hanging on him. Why can't you get clean once in a while . . .like with that Polish Kid Andy Andrecscxzjhykczxcszch? "

I work at Leo 'cause it's easy to spell.

We went back and forth on reform and the usual Who's-Who litany of rogues, cretins, feebs, dummies, crooks and phonies.

We landed back at good people. People who actually do something for other people -who will do anything without a Press Conference or naming of a Blue Ribbon Commission, or any one really ever knowing about it.

In Poetry things are neat; in prose, things are messy. Politics is Prosaic. It is un-Romantic. The Romantics in Politics - the Goo-goos; the Boiled Beets Progressives; the Dopes Who Believe EVERYTHING is like a Julia Roberts Movie; the Raving Lunatics Left/Center/Right - are the very people who screw things up. Romantic Politics makes more taxes and more corruption. It is a Hegelian thing.

It is the same thing in my Church - Romantic Goofballs like the dippy Nun escorting victims to an abortion - the poetic romantic channel surfers screw things up. Sister! Be a Unitarian Nun! They ARE WAY COOL!

We, Catholics, have had a very, very Gay Friendly Church Hierarchy and Clergy( Well, Who's to Say?) for well over forty years and then we find ourselves shocked when Father Daffodil is taking seven altar boys to Wisconsin with a video camera. Hey, spare me the 'Pedophile's Have Nothing to Do With Homosexuality' dodge - yeah, and pipe dope has nothing to do with plumbing.

If Only more attention could be focused on the people in public life who actually make a difference - no, not The Honorable Dorothy Brown - maybe, then, politics could start to work for people again.

The Chicago Tribune tucked a burp of information in a weather report. Thousands of Chicago's Poles celebrated their love of Freedom in Grant Park and the Chicago newspapers ignored them.

Culturally the Polish form a bed-rock Chicago's identity in labor (real labor), education, civic and religious life and in the performing and literary arts. I saw thousands of proud, sober, patriotic and dignified Polish Americans and Polish immigrants celebrate their love of freedom all along the Grant Park public peninsula.
No drunks, no idiots, no incidents, no Prgressive polemics and no News Coverage. If three gay bias loudmouths or one recognized Advocacy Activist shows up anywhere, Chicago newspapers shout a gathering of thousands.

The Newspapers of Chicago offering their steady platefulls of cant and advocacy nuance is a disgrace. But as I learned, you can not shame the Fourth Estate.

American Catholics - Time to Ask Where We Go to Mass - Grant Park or The Parish Near You!

Archbishop Charles Chaput wrote in his recent book, Render Unto Caesar,

“The point we must never forget is this: We need to keep fighting for the human person, starting with the unborn child and extending throughout life. We abandon our vocation as Catholics if we give up; if we drop out of political issues altogether or knuckle under to America’s growing callousness toward human dignity. We need to keep fighting. Otherwise we become what the Word of God has such disgust for: salt that has lost its flavor.”

The Sun Times, Chicago's Progressive Independent Voice of Chicago, is fighting for Gay Marriage. No children result from gay marriage - a biological imperative - but the Sun Times hammers home 'It's about the Children.' Which is the burning issue? Gay Rights it seems. Third Trimester Kids die every day thanks to Advocacy of a Woman's Right To Choose having a doctor jam a spike into the babies skulls and yank out the corpses with forceps, but the real heart-tugger comes when Randy and Andy ( gender Neutral handles) can not obtain a Cook County Marriage Licence from Dave Orr.

In Arkansas, voters barred unmarried couples from becoming adoptive or foster parents in a state that doesn't have enough foster homes. This action comes despite a recent study showing that same-sex couples play a critical role in the world of adoption because they will take the kids who are the hardest to place -- older children and ones with special needs.

So, a supposed pro-family measure winds up hurting children.

That is because marriage is between two people of opposite gender - a union that is intended - great lawyer-word INTENT - to propagate the species, or more feely -Families.

Gays enjoy sex to express love between two people of same sexual gender ( Man to Man; Woman to Woman). Everyone else expresses their love with sex in hope of having children and raising them according to that union.

The expression of love comes in many forms - sex is one and a powerful one. In our times ( between the 1960's and today) one of the most powerful expressions of love has become politics: Advocacy Politics pick and issue, get behind it and votes will pour in.

As Chicago Sun Times Advocacy Columnist, Neil Steinberg said today in his column on Chicago: The New Athens,

I listened to Catholic Journalist Raymond Arroyo last night and pointed out the liturgical nature of the Obama Celebration - almost a Mass it was! Thousands of people took Communion with President Elect Obama.

The Obama Liturgy in Grant Park on Tuesday Night and all that it means might be a good start to begin my examination of conscience.

We all live together to be sure, but we go Hell on our own.

Yes, indeed. Abortion has Advocacy. Gays have Advocacy. The Unborn are on their own.

Papuan/Irish Cousins See Through Ayers Small School Advocacy Scam: 'Sapotim John McCain!'

Saoirse and Colm Hat Ain-Hickey are Papuan/Irish headhunters attending Chicago Public Schools. The two boys are teased and bullied because they wear their traditional necklaces beaded with the shrunken skulls of enemies from the other side of the Owen Stanley Mountain Ranges in their native New Guinea. They wondered if an Advocay High Schools crafted by Billy Ayers and Barack Obama at the Chicago Anneberg Challenge, like the one proposed by CPS Chief Arne Duncan ( Bikpelka Tisa -in their native Papuan - Click my post title for help with their language)the Gay Inspired School for Social Justice Pride Campus. However, it seems that parents believe that this is a really stupid and segregationist idea.

Schools CEO Arne Duncan had hoped to open the school in the fall of 2010 to offer parents and students more choices and a feeling of safety. He has argued that gay and lesbian students have higher drop-out rates because they feel ostracized.

Duncan was emboldened by a national survey of 6,000 middle and high school students released by the Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network. It showed that nearly 90 percent were harassed at school and that 61 percent felt unsafe.

Rick Garcia, political director of Equality Illinois, said Daley is “absolutely correct” on Social Justice High.

“There’s no doubt there’s violence and bullying of gay kids and something has to be done, but segregating them is not the answer,” said Garcia. “It doesn’t stop bullying at other schools. And if a kid is different and the object of scorn or bullying, instead of addressing it, the teacher might say, ‘Send him to homo high.’

“Instead of a school for gay kids, maybe we need a school for the bullies. Gay kids are not the problem. Bullies and teachers and administrators who don’t stop the bullying are the problem,” he said.

While acknowledging the Mayor's understanding that CPS would not be able to sneak the opening of the school dedicated to homosexual culture and values - School for Social Justice Pride Campus, my cousin's two boys from Port Moresby, New Guinea are nevertheless encouraged by Arne Duncan's Progressive number crunching:

WOW! 90% of 6,000 students in the United States Student Population of 49.5 million in the last Census were bullied. The numbers are compelling . . .to two high school age scapegraces from the Coral Sea! They too had been systematically bullied by students teachers and administrators who objected to their Cultural Differences - while the boys are Christians of the Church of the Nazarene they cling to their Pacific Islander traditions of proudly wearing the shrunken heads of the enemies from the other side of the Owen Stanley Mountains back home in New Guinea. The effect is chilling!

AS I posted yesterday, if CPS, reformed by the work of Domestic terrorist/Distinguished Professor of Education Bill Ayers and Barack Obama, in their seminal work for the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, can study the impact of bullying and the imperative for Advocacy Politics, in support of a school solely dedicated to Gay/Lesbian/Bi-Sexual Issues and Values, there is hope for a Public School dedicated to Papuan/Irish Nazarene Headhunters.*




However, if this school only matters in terms of equity and equal outcomes for a trendy few ( Gay/Lesbian is Hot! - Watch Ellen! See the View!), one should look elsewhere. The boys' father Turloch feels that his sons should become Americans and maybe take off the necklaces of shrunken skulls as nod to gutpela gavman as Mayor Daley would say. Turloch no longer wears his necklace of skulls in his work at Sidley and Austin as an Urban Translator of Pacific Islander Issues.

In fact, Turloch dismisses the whole concept of Advocacy Politics in most things. He recently told me, 'Sapotim John McCain!'

Gay Advocacy nearly has demanded a 'sanctuary' school for gay/lesbian/bisexual students, where they can celebrate their uniqueness in this sea of cultural diversity and White Supremacist culture.

The Chicago Tribune has two scalding stories on the chilling bias that confronts to development and establishment of School for Social Justice Pride Campus. Tim King who has his own Charter School and Jonathan Turley a Washington University Law Professor make the cases for ever compliant Chicago Tribune. I can almost hear the Trib Board -'Hey, The really small minded helots are beefing about this Great Advocacy School let's get Tim King and Jonathon Turley to write nuanced and compelling commentary.

Tim King tells the time-honored 'really bright hopeful black kid getting mistreated by White Ethnic (Catholics, unless Jews) student when he tried to make friends and really learned the truth about White Supremacy, but did Okay later!' Oh, Selma! It is an inspiration just being in the same Time Zone as Tim King! However, it is Advocacy Lawyer Jonathan Turley who really sells it with reminders of segregationists:

The new school would serve 600 students, a relatively small number in a system with more than 400,000 students and 655 schools. It may indeed prove better for those students, as has Harvey Milk High. But the impact on the overall student body is the greatest concern. A school system has a legal and moral obligation to maintain a safe and nurturing environment. Chicago officials are embracing the approach of segregationists from the 1960s, who insisted that blacks would be "safer" in their own schools. ( emphasis my own)

The proposed gay high school is on some level a continuation of a trend in public education led by the Chicago Public Schools. Chicago is now a patchwork of specialized "charter" or "themed" schools that separate students by race, gender and professional aspirations. Various high schools now cater to specific military branches, including the Marines, Navy, Army and Air Force. Many educators, including myself, have opposed this trend as embracing segregation or aspiring to offer little more than trade schools. School systems such as Chicago are quickly becoming educational theme parks that have abandoned the concept of a shared common curriculum and community for learning.

On Nov. 19, Chicago school officials should take a truly brave stand against homophobia and intolerance. They should reject the School for Social Justice Pride Campus and demand that every school offer an accepting and positive environment for these students. We do not need thematic public education. We need core public education that trains our future citizens to live in a diverse and tolerant society.
