Real Jazz in Chicago: Gayle Kolb Sets the Standard for Sexy, Soulful and Sincere

This vocalist began her singing career in Los Angeles performing for many years at the Hyatt Hotels and the Hotel Bel-Air. With her jazzy voice, she had the honor of singing with greats such as Joe Pass and Sweets Edison.

Gayle is often noted for her vocal passion, husky whisper, and heartfelt vocal interpretation of the music. As one critic said, “She fills her songs with every uninhibited depth of herself.”

Later she moved her home base to Chicago (her home town) performing in Chicago at The Terrace and Las Vegas at the Stardust Hotel and the Tropicana not to mention the Blue Max Room and many more.

Katerina's on Irving Park Road features many of the best jazz artists in Chicago.  On Fridays the shows begin at 6:30 PM - there is the early show which requires no cover and a 9:30 PM seating with a modest cover.

Last night, my beautiful, talented, diminuitive diva, Ms. Terry Sullivan, and I enjoyed the great Gayle Kolb accompanied by the great Tommy Muellner on the piano for three forty minutes sets of high quality jazz.

Tommy Muellner is a jazz pianist who makes other musicians gasp with envy and discerning delight, because Tommy plays with a smile that betokens respect and genuine enjoyment of the art.  I can only think of Errol Garner, when Tommy solos.

Gayle Kolb reminds me of Julie London with greater range.

Last night Gayle added Eartha Kitt to my apprehension of tone and phrasing.

Gayle performed two of my favorite standards.  Enjoy!

St. Valentine's Day! Why I Love Women.

How We Men See Ourselves-

Empirical Man - How I Are. Anyway -

"As Madam Sappho in some sonnet said / 'A slap and a tickle / Is all that the fickle / Male / Ever has in his head' " Cole Porter, who went no where near Sappho, or any other skirt, on her best day.

("Unless they [men] are castrated, their brains do not function properly" Erica Jong from Sappho's Leap.

I have been a committed Sapphist all of of my life. Like most men, I have perpetually visiting Sapphic desires that are only augmented by a healthy regard for the dignity and strength that is woman, taught by women themselves. Nevertheless, I choose to hang on to Le Dieu du package donné Homme ( literal and metaphorical) until the warranty gives out; thank you, very much.

From Holy Mary Mother of God, to Ma - Ginny, to Sis Joan, to the departed Mary Cleary Mother of my children, to my girls Nora and Clare to my mother in-law Alice, to sister in law Gail Cleary and my St. Cajetan's sexy neighbor gals,to Sophisticated Lady, to Lady is a Tramp, to Snow White's Wicked StepMom ( my personal Milf #1.)to Alligator Woman, to Thank Heaven for Little Girls, to the Woman of My Dreams who deigns to be seen in public with me, to girls that had the very good sense to give me the brush off, To all the girls I've loved before Who travelled in and out my door I'm glad they came along I dedicate this song To all the girls I've loved before To all the girls I once caressed And may I say I've held the best For helping me to growI owe a lot I know Happy St. Valentine's Day!

Why you have anything to do with us lumpy, shiftless, attention defective, cartoon watching, lazy, whiney, horney, slip-shod hypochondriacs I will never know, but thank you.

We do what we can. . .if there is absolutely no way of putting it off, or getting out of it.

Women rule our thoughts, our vanities, our insecurities and our obligations. You clean us up, get us to church, and inspire us to be better than we are. No small task that.

A girl married to a very lucky Chicago Fireman in my neighborhood writes possibly the best antidote to the idiotic radical feminism so dominant in our culture. I believe that radical feminism nearly emasculated the American Male and diminished the natural and spiritual worth that is Woman. Marianne writes this about her choice in men. Girls and Perpetual Boys are the by-products of feminism it seems to me.

Girls are silly romantic dopes, like Amelia in Thackeray's Vanity Fair - in love with a fecklessly cruel sneak of a spoiled child, well into her middle age. Boys are obnoxious preening fops, who believe that they are poets and brigands - Byronic goofs. Boys are serial goats -leaping from sexual conquest to contest and always armed with a battery of bullshit.

Marianne, of We Band of Mothers notes:

Romantic Guy is the man who has perfected the art of making women swoon. He is poetry and roses. He is chivalrous. Gallant even. He is hard to resist because he feeds into a woman's desire for Hollywood romance and utter adoration.

Of course, Romantic Guy typically has the attention span of a flea. He tends to leave women sobbing in their lattes once his attention turns to the next best thing.

After one such relationship, I swore to my girlfriends that I didn't want to waste another moment with Romantic Guy. Instead, I longed for "Thick & Thin Guy."

Thick & Thin Guy stands by his gal in good times and in bad. He cares as much for her when she's a size 16 as he did when she was an 8. He is loyal, committed, and has never written a poem because he thinks only sissies do that.

I met and married Thick & Thin Guy. Life with my husband is not perfect, but it is pretty darn nice. I never doubt his love for his family, and he is the only man who has figured out that it's better to make me laugh than to do battle when I'm "in a mood."

You girls know what I'm talking about it

I love women! Girls are OK to witness, but absolutely lousy partners in anything. The only worse partner is a Boy. Try getting one to meet an obligation - too many toys and too much time.

I love women unconditionally.

Happy St. Valentine's Day!

Contractor Eddie Carroll Explains 'Old World Craftsmanship' to My Sophisticated Lady

This weekend I had the pleasure to introduce the woman I love to an old and dear friend. I had been telling the elegant, dainty and sophisticated lady of roofing contractor, wit and roué Eddie Carroll these past three years and she became doubtful of this worthy's corporeal existence.

" We have yet to meet this Mr. Carroll of whom you speak so glowingly. I believe that he is a creation of your fictive turn of mind," the miniature Jennifer Jones charged.

" Honest Injun, Eddie is all too real," I protested. As luck would have it, I noticed Mr. Carroll entering the happy portals of Keegan's Pub on Western Avenue, following a surprise party we attended Saturday afternoon. I obeyed the laws of traffic and courtesy and safely made the necessary turns for a return to the aforenamed past premisis.

Eddie Carroll greeted our entry with his customary largess ( "Bridget, get Hickey and this good-looking woman anything they want and get a round for the house!") and warmth. My Lady and I and the other guy in the bar enjoyed a refreshing beverage thanks to Eddie Carroll.

We caught up and my lady friend was enchanted. Eddie's broad interests and dapper turns of phrase melted away her doubts concerning the good man's worth and existence on this our planet earth. Matters sundry and sublime filled the afternoon air as the liquid quantities in the flowing bowls vanished.

The elegant Miss Sullivan asked Eddie about his Company's tag-line - "Old World Craftsmanship."

Eddie Carroll explained, " I hire only foreigners, salt-water Irish and other DPs ( Displaced Persons in the now politically incorrect sobriquet). Here's an example. Last week I was inspecting an interior rehab job. I do mostly roofing, but also some home refurnishing. Two of Hickey's third cousins from Kerry work for me.

The Two Turkeybirds are hammering floorboards down in a house. Eamonn picks up a nail, determines it’s upside down & throws it away

He carries on doing this until Ownie Brosnan says, 'Why are yer throwing them away?'

'Because they’re upside down,' says Eamonn.

'Fur #$%^'s Sakes! Ye daft prated Ejit,” shouts Ownie, “save ‘em for the ceiling!!'

'Aye, . . . and so,' says Eamonn

Old World Craftsmanship, my dear."

Skinny Sheahan- Icon or Chick Magnet - Either Way He's Ahead of the Pack!

Yesterday, I was driving to O'Hare Airport on the Kennedy and was riveted by the above Chicago Marathon Icon - the woman who graces my company and passenger in Phaeton Hickey remarked, "Why, that is Skinny Sheahan* on that wall. That spot is generally given to images of scantily clad children, pouting suggestively."

With my customary focus to the Illinois Rules of Road- Sec. Jesse White editor and publisher- hands at 2 and 10, proper application of my leg, ankle and foot muscles to the accelerator with regard to posted speed limits, all electronic communications devices off, a grin of self-assured confidence strained with pity due to my witness of sinfully self-absorbed bad drivers, my peripheral vision took in the sight of the image of James "Skinny" Sheahan leading the pack of runners.

"Indeed, Madam, Skinny is on the Wall and wherever good and patriotic men and virtuous women and innocent bright-eyed children need a Champion! ( heroic orchestral music rising) There's a new spirit abroad in the land. The old days of grab and greed are on their way out. We're beginning to think of what we *owe* the other fellow, not just what we're compelled to give him. The time is coming, Ms. Sullivan, , when we cannot fill our bellies in comfort while the other fellow goes hungry, or sleep in warm beds while others shiver in the cold. And we shan't be able to kneel and thank God for blessings before our shining altars while men anywhere are kneeling in either physical or spiritual subjection.

But in the days to come, the American people for their own safety and the good of all will walk together in majesty and in justice and in peace. Skinny is on that Wall . . .We want him on that Wall . . .we Need Him on that Wall!
."

The elegant woman marveled, "Your words are so noble . . ."

I cut her off, as is my wont, post gerund but mid-thought, 'Not mine, Ms. Sullivan -James "Skinny' Sheahan . . .or from an old Sherlock Holmes movie, or something. I'm getting a big ass popcorn at O'Hare."

"Please, use that language with the boys at Keegan's, I don't care for that."

" Sorry . . .well I'm getting the large one anyway.'

"That's nice. Watch the truck in front of you, please."

In Hoc Signo Vinces!
